BIOGRAPHICAL (Gervais Star 16 Sep 1927 1:6):
"SYLVESTER MANNING BADLY HURT. What might have been a serious accident happened to S. D. Manning on Tuesday morning at 3 o'clock. Manning was running his mint still, and while unloading a tank slipped and fell backwards off of the loading platform about five feet high, landing on the back of his neck and shoulders. He was alone at the time and while he was not completely helpless he was unable to get help or do anything but wait until his son Don came to work at 6:30 o'clock.
Dr. Dowd was called and brought Manning in. As ex-ray picture was taken, when they found that the verebra bone in the spinal column was cracked. Manning is in bed and will be there for a few days."
OBITUARY:
People of this community were shocked Thursday afternoon when word came that S. D. Manning was drowned Wednesday evening about 6:30 near Clatskanie. He had come up from Clatskanie to get his household goods and was nearing his home where he operated a large mint acreage. The truck in which he and his brother-in-law P. F. Jones of Portland were riding slid off an embankment into a slough filled with water. In some manner the door on his side was sprung and he was unable to open it. Mr. Jones succeeded in getting out and his call for help soon brought assistance.
Sylvester D. Manning was born at St. Louis November 14, 1878. He was married to Anna F. McClard in June 1899. Mrs. Manning died just two weeks ago.
He is survived by his father, Dennis Manning, sisters and brothers, Agnes Sequin, Alice Klinger, Fred, Rose Sequin, Serena Manning, Frank, Louise Schwab and Adrian. Children: Mrs. L. L. Jepson of Portland, Mrs. Harold Aspinwall of Clatskanie, Donald of Salem, Cecil of Portland, and Kenneth of Salem, and seven grandchildren.
