Nothing is known at this time of his parentage or early life, prior to 1849, when he came over the Oregon trail to the Willamette Valley. From the Dalles he came via the Columbia river. He took up a donation land claim near Brooks in Marion County, and in 1853 he was married to Elizabeth Baird of Lane county, Oregon. The Baird family came from Fayetteville, Arkansas (where Elizabeth was born on December 9, 1836), to California by way of the ox team, and in 1848 took passage on a sail boat at San Francisco for Astoria. It took them six weeks to make the trip, as their boat encountered a severe storm that blew them nearly to the Sandwich Islands before they could right themselves for their destination. The Baird family settled in Lane county, Oregon" [clipping, not cited]
