OBITUARY: Funeral services were held for Catherine Blanton at the chapel of Clough-Barrick mortuary in Salem, Saturday at 1 p.m. A large number of friends and relatives attended to pay final respects to this old time resident of Broks. She passed away Wednesday evening at a Salem hospital. She was 93 years 11 months and 29 days old.
Rev. G.I. Loveall of Portland, a long time friend of the family, afficiated. Mrs. Malcolm Ramp sang “Abide With Me”, “Sweetly Resting” and “Goodnight ad Good Morning”. The pallbearers were: W. Howard Ramp, Ralph Sturgis, Romeo Gouley, Ronald Jones, John Farrar and Ed Sandrich. Interment was in the Pioneer cemetery north of Brooks, where her husband, John Blanton, and four children are buried. There were many flowers, which consisited mostly of Lilies, Asters and Gladiolas.
She was the daughter of James and Hannah Shepherd and a member of a family of eight. In 1852 at the age of nine, with her parents, she crossed the plains. She lived continuously on her farm at the Brooks four corners for 70 years.
She is survived by five daughters and three sons; Mrs. Charles Van Osdol of Nebraska, Mrs. Mary Rennie of Thurston, Mrs. Hannah Veatch and Mrs. Alice Waite of Salem, Mrs. Pearl Harris of Brooks, William of Eugene, M. Blanton of Seattle and Raymond of Woodburn. Four children preceded her in death; James, Franklin, John and Rosella; 31 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren survive.
She had been a member of the Methodist church for 84 years and was an honor member of the local Ladies Aid society at the time of her death. She was a great lover of music, did a great amount of quilt piecing and lived a fruitful life.
