BIOGRAPHICAL:
"In 1871, Mrs. La Joy and her sons, Louis and Henry, lived in a small log house where the Mathias Dunn home is now located. The neighbors called this home the "family of contrasts". Mrs. La Joy was large, while the sons were slightly underweight. They had no means of getting about, except a shaggy-maned, large horse and a small, bang-tailed pony with a roached mane. The most important use for hitching this contrasting team together was to "snake" or draw logs for fuel. These logs were worked into lengths for the fires by a cross-cut saw. This was operated by Mrs. La Joy at one end and Henry at the other. Responsibility for earning the family living fell on Lou - the older boy's shoulders. He worked for the neighbors and was seldom at home except on Sundays".

BIOGRAPHICAL:
"Miss Jane Jefferson was the teacher in the old Union schoolhouse in 1871. Henry La Joy carried off the honors in athletics, especially foot races. He was fond of telling his schoolmates how he had often escaped many dangers by being able to run so fast. When the La Joys left for southern Oregon, Louis took the Oregon California stage to go ahead and look for a location. A week later, Henry and his mother left on foot. The horses were packed with the family belongings. Mrs. La Joy was leading the large horse and Henry bringing up the rear with the pony. I have heard that there are no survivors of the pioneer family of so many contrasts."
