BIOGRAPHICAL:
"Edward Melvin Jones was a boy of promise, ambitious to succeed in farm management. His judgement was so good and he was so dependable that he was of great assistance on the farm. Too young for entrance in the World War, he strove earnestly to comply with the food administration's program, and by accident lost his life in this service."

OBITUARY:
Last Friday morning Melvin Jones, 17 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Jones, while running a tractor on his father’s farm near Gervais, and backing his machine to make a turn out of a gate from the old orchard, came into contact with a tree and in jumping to save himself his right leg was caught between the cross bar where plows are attached and the tree, as he fell to the ground. No one was near and the engine being in reverse kept a jamming back and the wheels sinking into the ground until it stalled the engine, but the boy was still held tight.
Mr. Jones was away from home and Mrs. Jones not knowing how to handle the tractor, phoned to the Gervais garage for a man to come and start the tractor before the boy could be gotten loose. Ted Johnson arrived as soon as possible, as did also Doctor Hickman, and when the boy was finally loosened, his leg below the knee was badly crushed.
He is survived by his parents and four brothers and several half brothers and a half sister.
The funeral took place Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Pioneer church and burial in the Pioneer cemetery.
