OBITUARY:
Alvah Woolery Instantly Killed.
Hit by Car as he Neared Pavement at the Checkerboard Corner.
The citizens of Gervais were shocked Saturday night shortly after six o’clock when the report reached town that Alvah Woolery, aged 70, was accidently killed on the highway at the Checkerboard Auto ramp by a passing Autoist, the victim evidently never knowing what happened to him.
Piecing together opinions by many and of the beliefs of the state police and district attorney, there was nothing to indicate other than the accident was purely accidental. Mrs. Woolery had been over to the J. H. Cutsforth home, near the scene of the accident, to do the chores and was on his way home. He was carrying a pail of milk with him. Rain was falling and in his hurry to get home Mr. Woolery had evidently not seen the car approaching from the north when he started across the highway, but had not reached the paving when he was hit by the car that killed him. It is probable the car was going so fast the driver froze to the wheel and was unable to miss his victim. The driver of the death car, a man named Follis of Salem said his victim running across the highway when he saw him, which was too late to avoid the contact. He was badly crushed and no doubt other fractures and injuries were sustained. For more than an hour his remains were on a cot set up at the service station and about 7:50 taken to the Ringo Funeral Parlors at Woodburn. For one his age, Mr. Woolery was a very active man and could do a real day’s work.
The deceased made two trips to Oregon before settling here, the first one being in 1909; but he shortly returned to Rockford, Illinois, where he was born, Dec. 23, 1856. He was married to Helen Atkinson at St. Mary’s, Ontario, Canada, Jan. 19, 1886. To this union one son, Roy A. was born. She passed away on Sept. 19, 1926, at Belvidere, Ill.
In 1927 Mr. Woolery returned to Oregon to make his home at Gervais. On July 30, 1927, Mr. Woolery and Mrs. Elisa Wilson of Gervais were married at Vancouver, Wash., and have continued to reside here. Besides his widow, he is survived by his son, Roy A. Woolery of Mt. Shasta, Calif; one sister, Nellie Stephenson of Indiana; three half-sisters, Mrs. Josephine Parker of Shelton, Wa., Mrs. Rose Ritchie and Mrs. Nettie McDougall of Gervais; two half-brothers, Henry and Walter of Salem, and two granddaughters, Nora and Zella Mae Woolery of Salem, who are ill with scarlet fever, and several nieces and nephews; step-children, Mrs. Dillard Wilson of Powers, Mrs. George McDonald of Gervais, Ira and Lee Gerber and Irvine McLaren of Seaside, and Mrs. Retha Caviness of Yamhill.
The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the Presbyterian church, Rev. John W. Hood officiating. Ringo Funeral Services in charge. Interment followed at Pioneer cemetery.
The many floral pieces were a high tribute to the esteem friends had for Mr. Woolery. Mrs. Herman Jelderks and Ralph Barber sang “In the Garden” and “Land Kingly Light”, Mrs. J. C. Adams accompanied at the piano. The pallbearers were C.W. Cutsforth, Zane Schwab, Robert Harper, Gordon Jones, J.C. Adams and Hugh Cutsforth.
