OBITUARY: 
Funeral services for A.E. Austin, Sr., prominent Woodburn resident for the past 57 years who died Sunday afternoon at the Salem Memorial hospital were held Wednesday afternoon at the Ringo chapel here with Rev. H.F. Pemberton officiating. Interment was at the Pioneer cemetery near Brooks.

Alpheus E. Austin was born in Meeker county, Minn., August 22, 1867, the son of the late J.A. Austin, and came to Woodburn with his parents in May 1891. He was with his father in the grocery business the first year and was later employed in the dry goods stores of Albert Welch and S.I. Guiss here. In 1898 he opened a dry goods store of his own and had owned and operated the A.E. Austin store here for over 50 years.
He was married to Grace B. Jones of Brooks on October 14, 1896. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in October of 1946 and had lived for the past 46 years at their home at 215 Third St.
Mr. Austin served for a number of years as clerk of the Woodburn school district, a member of the chamber of commerce, Sons of the American Revolution and an active member of the Woodburn Methodist church. He served as superintendent of the Sunday school of that church for many years.
He is survived by his widow; a son, Lt. Col Leland A. Austin in Munich, Germany; two daughters, Mrs. Jay Allen of New York and Mrs. John Kallak of Mitchell; three grandchildren, Mrs. Maurice H. Gardner of Richland, Wash., Miss Sally Austin in Germay and Jay C. Michael Allen at Harvard university; a brother, Harold M. Austin of Woodburn; and two sisters, Mrs. Alice Cornutt of Portland and Miss Laura Austin, a missionary in India for many years who is now on her way home.
