OBITUARY: 
Private service was held for Emerson Elton Jones, a retired National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration captain, who died Wednesday in a Portland area hospital. Mr. Jones, a Northeast Portland resident, was 71.
Born in Salem, Mr. JOnes was a graduate of Portland public schools and attended Oregon State University and the University of Washington. During World War II he served in Alaska with the US Coast and Geodetci Survey. Later he worked 33 years as a civil engineer for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and developed a comnputerized navigational system that is now used worldwide. He retired and returned to Portland in 1969.
He was a member of the NOAA Retired Commissioned Officers Association and of Lamba Chi fraternity at the University of Washington.
Mr. Jones is survived by his wife, Clara A.; a son, Jab B., of Danville, Pa.; a daughter, Pamela M. Carter, Portland; a brother, Albert L., of Portland; and four grandchildren.
Interment was in Rose City Cemetery [sic].
