OBITUARY:

Obituary provided by Jack Schafer:

Heinrich Schafer
July 6, 1838 to November 24, 1894

Dear Zionsbote: because you are a faithful messenger, at the request of my dear brother in Oregon, I am sending you a sad message (Trauerbotschaft).

It has pleased the dear Lord to call our Father, Heinrich Schafer, home, especially since he has been sickly for 23 years and had become increasingly weaker, and longed to go home. At the last he had to spend 5 weeks in bed.

He gave himself completely into the will of God, and he never complained because his longing was only that the Lord would so relieve him. He approached death with joy!

He would often say to his loved ones as they cried in his presence, “don’t cry, because I am going where there is no more sickness.”

The last afternoon he couldn’t get enough air, and he believed that the Lord was here to get him, and he was happy, but it improved and after he could speak again, he said” I was so happy that I could go along, but now I am still here!”

Thus he waited for the Lord to come and take him. Seven o’clock in the evening he fell into a peaceful sleep so that it was almost impossible to notice that he had died.

Our Father leaves behind a deeply sorrowful widow with 9 children. He became a father to 13, 4 of which went on before him; grandfather of 16 children, 7 of whom went before him into eternity. Five of the 9 children are married. Mother still has 4 children at home.

The funeral message was given y a Baptist Minister by the name of Fechter on Revelation 14:13 in the home of the deceased, and at the grave CC Kliewer spoke. There was no English message.

My Father attained the age of 56 years, 3 moths, and 26 days. He was a believer for 17 years. He was born in Russia, emigrated to America, settled in Kansas where he lived 5 years and where he became a Christian and was received into the Brotherhood by Brother Eckert.

From Kansas he moved to Dakota and was a member of the congregations there and from there he moved to Oregon where he died on November 24, 1894.
