Melvin "Don" Hermansen Jr.
October 9, 1943 - October 26, 2011
SALEM - Don Hermansen experienced perfect peace when he went to dwell with the Lord forever, just a couple weeks after his 68th birthday. Born to Melvin and Lillian Hermansen in Long Beach, California, he grew up with his six siblings. After graduating from Long Beach Polytechnic High School, he moved across the country to attend Anderson College in Anderson, Indiana. He continued on to receive his Masters of Divinity at Anderson School of Theology. An additional year earned him a teaching degree, and the opportunity to meet Ginny Johnston. On August 31, 1969 he took her as his wife. Don spent the next twenty years serving under the Church of God as a pastor to three congregations in Baker, Oregon; Bakersfield, California; and Salem, Oregon. In 1994, he put his teaching degree to use as a teacher at Hillcrest Youth Correctional Facility. After working with troubled youth for sixteen years, he retired in 2010. Throughout this time he was a proud father to his six children and many foster children. Don loved to seek out the fun in life. He enjoyed being in the middle of God's creation, especially if the sun was shining bright. He liked traveling, taking walks, studying astronomy, solving math puzzles, and finding adventures to experience with friends and family. Nobody could find a deal or possess the perfect coupon like him. Don is survived by his wife Ginny; his children Shellie (Jim) Schifferer, Steve (Christine) Hermansen, Mark (Jamie) Hermansen, Christi (Jeff) Kurtz, Joel Hermansen, and Kaylene (Matt) Bain; and his seventeen grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, October 31st at 11:00 am at Salem Alliance Church, 555 Gaines St. NE, Salem, OR 97301. Arrangements by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service
Donations can be made in Don's name to Salem Alliance Church.
