BIOGRAPHICAL (From Mt. Hope Cemetery, pg 172):
Johannes Augustus Kissling, nee Jean von Schwarzenburg, was born November 28, 1830, near Thun, Switzerland. John Kissling was his “common name” used in his public role. He was known by both names at the colony he founded in Tennessee and his memorial given at the anniversary of his death noted his full identity. John was a highly-educated man, fluent in five languages, conversant in seven. He taught school in several of the colonies he headed in Tennessee, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.
As the head of the Swiss Emigration Society in Switzerland, he first came to the U.S. on a diplomatic visa in 1867 to Tennessee as the head of a colony which relocated Jewish families from 8 European nations. When they had achieved naturalization, he returned to Switzerland with his wife, Melanie duRobert, who died after their return. John became a U.S. citizen in Ohio in 1873 after he returned to the U.S.
John’s ancestors originally came from Spain, but also resided for a time in Norway, France, and Austria. John’s mother was from Austria, from the von Schwarzenburg lineage, which gave John his title and surname.
Four wives preceded John in death: Helena duRobert, Elizabeth Luthy, Melanie duRobert, and Magdalena Bass. All but Lena died in Switzerland.
John Kissling and Maria Blauer were married in January 1881 at San Jose, CA. Their marriage had been arranged by mutual Kissling relatives. John and Maria were second cousins and shared a number of relatives from the Suter, Luthy, Blauer, and Kissling families. Brothers Fred and Rudolph had preceded John to California. His sisters Susan and Anna remained in Switzerland.
John had 8 children: A son, Johannes Sebastian born to Elizabeth Luthy, who died at birth; John, Jr., Jacob Paul, and a son who was stillborn, born to Magdalena Bass. John and Maria Blauer had four children: William John, Frederick R., Maria Emma Anna Elizabeth and Hans. On June 12, 1891, John was kicked by a horse and died of his injuries. His passing was observed by a large memorial service at his first colony in Tennessee. John was survived by his wife, Maria, as well as children, Jacob, William, Fed, Maria, and Hans. Maria continued to live at their home at Willard the rest of her life.
OBITUARY:
Jno. Kissling, who lived near Ease Side Junction, while attempting to catch a horse out in the pasture, was kicked by the horse in the abdomen, causing his death Sunday evening. Mr. Kissling was over sixty years of age, a native of Switzerland and leaves a wife and five children. He was buried in the Eoff cemetery.
