Marion Pioneer is Dead – Mrs. Julia Griffith Hibbard Died At Age Of 78 Years – Crossing Plains in 1850, Woman Passed the Winter at What Was Then the Hudson Bay Post – Mrs. Julia Griffith Hibbard, Oregon pioneer of 1850, died on April 26 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H. H. Paget, in the Waldo Hills.
Mrs. Hibbard was the wife of the late King L. Hibbard, and crossed the plains from Missouri in 1850. Mrs. Hibbard spent the winter at what was then the Hudson Bay post at Vancouver, Wash., from where she moved with her people to the Waldo Hills in Marion County. With the exception of a few years, Mrs. Hibbard had spent the 68 years of her residence in Oregon.
Her death occurred where the King Hibbard farm was laid out in 1859 [1849]. She was the last of the Chisholm Griffith family, so long identified with the life of Marion County.
As one who had endured the rigors of pioneer life, Mrs. Hibbard could relate many reminiscences of interest. Hers was indeed a keen recollection of early events. She was born in Missouri in 1840.
The funeral which took place Sunday, April 28, from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Paget, was attended by many relatives and pioneers, a fitting tribute to her long, useful, and unselfish life. She was the mother of eight children, of whom the following are now living: Dr. L. E. Hibbard of Burns, Or.; Mrs. J. C. Currie, of the Waldo Hills; Mrs. George E. Hall and Claude C. Hibbard of Portland. A son, Hal, died in the Philippines while a member of the Second Regiment, Oregon Volunteers.
Interment of Mrs. Hibbard’s remains was in the family plot in the Waldo Hills Cemetery.
