1870 IN CENSUS - Sarah J. Manning, age 36, b. Indiana, is enumerated with William, age 38, occupation farmer, b. Indiana, along with Charles T., age 10, b. Indiana, Isaac A., age 6, b. Indiana, and Mary E., age 3, b. Indiana;
BIOGRAPHICAL (Obituary for husband, William Manning):
WILLIAM MANNING WILL BE BURIED TOMORROW. Soldier, Teacher, Preacher. Had lived Active Life--Born in Indiana. Came to Oregon in '57--William Manning, soldier, school master, farmer, minister of the gospel and politician, died at his home on Ferry and Winter streets yesterday morning shortly after 1 o'clock. The funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the First Christian church. Rev. P. T. Porter, pastor of the church will officiate. -- Leaves Home Early -- Born in Arlington, Indiana, November 8, 1822, the son of Thomas Manning and his wife Elizabeth Knobb, Mr. Manning left home when a lad in his early twenties and came to California. He returned to Indiana in 1852, a very short time after he arrived in the west, and was united in marriage with Miss Sarah Hunt, November 24, 1852. Two children of this union survive, Charles Thomas and Isaac Augustus. Isaac Manning, who is well known in Salem is at present occupying the position as United States Consulate at Baranquilla, Columbia.
-- Enlists as Soldier --
At the outbreak of the Civil war the deceased enlisted and at the end of the war was mustered out with the rank of major in the Indiana Home guards. In 1857 he moved to Oregon hoping that the mild climate might restore his wife's failing health. She died soon after arriving here, however, and is buried in the Hunt family cemetery in Marion County.
In December, 1875 Mr. Manning married Catherine Brown and one child was born to this union, William Albert. Mr. Manning taught school for several terms in the Waldo Hills, farmed there for a short time, was engaged in business in Salem in the early seventies and in Canyonville, Oregon from 1880-1891, after which date he made his home in Salem. In 1885 he served in the Oregon state legislature as representative from Douglas county. Mr. Manning was ordained to the ministry of the Christian church in Indiana. He preached for the church at Canyonville and had often supplied for the First Christian church of Salem.
At the time of his death he was secretary of the Wallace park board and was actively interested in improving the conditions in an about the park.
