Silverton native Harry LaBare Riches of 11474 Sunnyview Rd. died July 27 at Silverton Hospital. He was 88.
Mr. Riches was a native of the Waldo Hills, born July 8, 1895, the eldest son of Charles R. and Olive LaBare Riches. He was raised on the Donation Land Claim #543 of his grandfather, George P. S. Riches, who crossed the plains in a wagon train in 1847.
He attended Centerview Elementary School, Silverton High School, and graduated from Oregon Agriculture College, now Oregon State University in 1924, after serving with the Army in World War I.
In January of 1934 he was appointed Marion County Agricultural Agent, the first one in Marion County, and held that position for 16 years. In 1936, as County Agent, he was instrumental, along with E. R. Jackman of the Oregon State Extension Service, in starting the first small plantings of Fine Fescue Turf Grass, including a few acres on his own farm. Fescue is now a major crop of the hill area and Willamette Valley.
While at OAC, he was cadet colonel of the Army Reserve Office Training Corp. He became a first lieutenant in the Oregon National Guard after attending officer’s school at Ft. Benning, Ga., in 1928. As captain, he was commander of Company I, 162 Infantry, 41st Infantry Division of Silverton.
In 1940 he was transferred to Regular Army in the Quartermaster Corps. He went overseas in 1943 to North Africa, on to the landing at Solerno, Italy, then through France, Belgium and to Berlin, Germany. He was retained for one year after the end of the war in Bremen, Germany, with the Army of Rehabilitation Military Government. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star medal. Harry retired from the Oregon National Guard in 1951 as a lieutenant colonel with 33 years of service.
He played bugle with the Salem National Champions of 1932 Drum and bugle Corps of Capitol Post 9, American Legion for several years. He played second violin with the Salem Symphony for nine years while in his 70s. Competing with the Oregon National Guard Rifle Team at Camp Perry, Ohio, 1930-1935, he was a member of the President’s One Hundred twice. This Group holds the designation of being the best riflemen in the United States. In 1935 he was National Individual Champion at Camp Perry in the American Legion competition.
In 1968 he was Conservation Farmer of the Year for the Silver Creek Soil Conservation District. In 1975, with sons Jack and Wayne, was selected for the Wheat League Conservation Farmer of the Year Award for the Willamette Valley counties.
Mr. Riches was a charter and life member of Salem Elks Lodge, Past Master of Masonic Lodge AF & AM of Silverton, Past WOS Willamette White Shrine 2 Salem, Past Worthy Patron of Ramona Chapter OES Silverton, member of American Legion, Grange and Silverton United Methodist Church.
On June 30, 1934, he married Cathaleene Cuddy of Mankato, Minn., a Silverton schoolteacher. Their children are Capt. Raymond C. Riches, USN, Ret., Jack C. Riches, Wayne C. Riches, and Cathaleene E. Mogle, all of Salem.
