BIOGRAPHICAL:
Edna Johanna Magreta Rissell was born on April 14, 1910, near Fremont, Nebraska to Hermann and Johanna Dahl Hoffman. She was the third of eight children.
Edna met Walter Rissell at the Walter Savage Carnival where he worked as a ferris wheel operator and they were married on May 1, 1929, in Yankton, South Dakota.
During the depression years, Walt became an auto mechanic and later a diesel truck mechanic. Edna and Walt moved to Oregon in 1947 with their children – Doris, Salem; Clarence, Gladstone; and Joan, Newport. They later bought property in the Waldo Hills area where they operated a family farm…
In addition to her children, Edna leaves to cherish her memory her sister, Luella Schack-Faust; nine grandchildren, Mike McCulley, Terri McCulley Lewallen, Debra Rissell Martin, Ritch Rissel, Gayleen Smith Robblee, and Jay, Bryan, Jerry and Dyann Smith. She was especially proud of her seven great grandchildren, Katrina McCulley; Christopher, Katheryn and Craig Lewallen, Erika Martin, and Jennifer and Scott Robblee.
Edna is remembered by her children, family and friends for her spunkiness, fun-loving enthusiasm, and good natured ways. The sound of her laughter and warmth of her love were a part of every day life. Edna’s love of and for life was reflected in everything she did and had impact on the lives of everyone she knew.
Her grandchildren remember her as the one they could talk to openly and honestly, one who would accept and still love – not condemn – even when she didn’t approve. But they also knew that they couldn’t put anything over on her and she’d call them on it if they tried. They spent fun-filled days talking and playing games and cards. They affectionately remember her Conestoga Wagon cookie jar and three-tiered candy jar overflowing with homemade treats.
Edna was always first up in the morning and last to bed at night, never complaining about her aches and pains or how much work she had to do. She had endless compassion and always worried about the troubles of others, never her own. Canes and crutches didn’t stop Edna as she worked beside Walt on the farm – driving trucks, sewing sacks, or climbing the combine steps to ride beside him and keep him company while he worked.
Edna loved all that was beautiful and all that God made – flowers in the field, sunsets, ocean waves, and mountain peaks. She adored babies and animals, especially her dogs. She dearly enjoyed visiting with her many, many friends and playing cards with them. Edna was an avid sports fan and fervent Trailblazer backer, never missing a broadcast game and without hesitation she would wager a dollar or two with family members or friends. You can rest assured the Blazers will win now – they have a new Guardian Angel looking over them.
