OBITUARY:
McClellan Shot Down – West Stayton – The family of Capt. Paul Truman McClellan, Jr., 34, has been notified that the Air Force jet pilot is missing in Viet Nam.
McClellan was on a combat mission November 14, in a Sky Raider when his plane was shot down by unfriendly ground fire according to word received here. His body has not been recovered, according to the family. McClellan, whose parents are long time residents of this community, had been home on leave four weeks ago. His wife, Valerie, and four children, Paul, 13, Patricia, 11, Robert, 10, and Suzanne, 3, reside next door to the senior McClellans. Survivors also include a half brother, Gene of Gates, and a half sister, Glenna. The United States Air Force captain was born July 7, 1931, in Stayton, and graduated from Stayton High School. He was also a graduate of Oregon State University where he was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1953. He was a career serviceman.
McClellan married his high school sweetheart, Valerie Walker, Lyons, 14 years ago. He had been stationed in Viet Nam eight months and was flying an average of two missions a day. He had over 150 missions to his credit. While in Viet Nam, McClellan had been hit twice before on different missions.
He had been awarded the United States Air Force Air Medical in August for aerial achievement. He won the award for personal bravery and airmanship.
He also was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for meritorious services as an F-105 instructor pilot at the summer ceremony.
If his body is recovered, civil ceremonies will take place in Stayton at a date to be announced, with burial at Mt. Hope Cemetery north of Stayton. A jet fly over by members of McClellan’s squadron is also pending. [uncited]
