S.A. Balch, Independence Resident, Dies
Independence – Stephen Arnold Balch, 83 of 142 Oak Street, Independence, died Saturday at a Salem hospital following an illness of several months.
Balch was born July 30, 1876, at Hopewell and lived in Marion and Polk Counties all his life. He lived in Independence the last five years. Balch was married May 22, 1904, at Prineville to Iva May McCallister, who survives. Other survivors include two sons, Emmet Balch, Rio Vista, Calif., and Burl Balch, Klamath Falls, and two grandchildren.
Arrangements are pending at Smith-Krueger Mortuary.

Balch Rites Set Tuesday – Independence – Funeral services for Stephen Arnold Balch, 83, resident of Marion and Polk counties most of his life who died Saturday at a Salem hospital, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Smith-Krueger Chapel here with Rev. James H. Soden officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, east of Salem.
Balch, resident of Independence for the past five years, resided at 142 Oak Street.
