Wm. B. McCALLISTER HOUSE
Described by Mrs. R. L. Andrews
The W. B. McCallister house near Pratum, built in 1906, is a two story dwelling with veranda across the front. Veranda is decorated with a domed effect on the roof and with bands of turned dowel and brackets. The first floor had an entrance hall with parlor to the left through sliding pocket doors; living and dining room to the south with bay window: bedroom with bath to the north of that and large kitchen with pantry to the west. Corner, back-to-back fireplaces were in lving room and parlor; these were faced with glazed tile. A stairway with tow turns, led from the entrance hall to a long hallway on the second floor, from which opened four large bedrooms with walk-in closets. There was no central heating; only the fireplaces and the kitchen range. The house was plastered throughout with hard, smooth plaster, tinted aqua throughout the first floor. Woodwork was stained dark brown and varnished. The windows had two large panes, each.
At the time that he built this house, W. B. McCallister was prospering through grinding wheat into flour at his mill on Pudding River, across the road from his home. There was a covered bridge across the river here.
Information furnished by Pearl Eyre Andrews, who, as a young teacher at the Pratum School, boarded with the McCallisters and lived in the house 1915-1917.
