OBITUARY:
Carl Anderson Dies Under Car – Well Known Young Man of Salem Victim of Misfortune Near Rickreall – Automobile Runs Over Embankment, Pinning Victim Beneath – He is Strangled by Gasoline – Companion is Slightly Injured – Carl Anderson, 21 years old, son of S.F. Anderson, met death about 9 o’clock Sunday night when an automobile driven by himself and Keith White, also of Salem, rolled off the embankment of a grade north of Rickreall, about six miles from Salem. The car was turned bottom side up and Anderson was pinned beneath the steering wheel. Not a bone in his body was broken and apparently he was asphyxiated by gasoline escaping from the inverted tank.
Arthur J. Sperling, one of those who came along and assisted in extricating the body of Anderson from beneath the machine, says that the young man was dead when he was taken out. This was about twenty minutes after Mr. Sperling arrived, the position of the overturned car and the young man’s body making the task of removal a very difficult one. Young White succeeded in pulling himself from beneath the car, but his body was badly bruised and lacerated in some places, while the escaping gasoline aggravated his wounds.
According to White’s story, a fence rail lay across the road near the end of the bridge and in turning the car to escape the rail, a tire blew out, making it impossible for Anderson, who was driving, to regain the road from the embankment over which the car had gone. The machine is said to have struck the fence, crashed through it, and landed in the pasture of Thomas Brunk.
The boys called for help, but it was several minutes before Mr. and Mrs. Sperling drove up. While Mr. Sperling busied himself with assisting White in an attempt to remove the car from Anderson’s body, Mrs. Sperling went to the houses of Mr. Brunk and Mr. Looney, who lived near, for help. At one of the houses she telephoned to Salem for a physician.
In the meantime, two men came by in an auto truck and assisted in removing Anderson’s body. The physician who arrived soon afterwards was unable to revive the young man.
Anderson was a member with his father of the firm of Eoff & Anderson, proprietors of the Great Western Garage. The funeral will be held from the home, 488 South Seventeenth Street, at 10 o’clock Wednesday.
