BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Bertha Mabel Krenz Darby was born into the Krenz family on August 4, 1895, in the community known at that time as Lewisburg, where her father served as postmaster. The Post Office was located on the porch of the farmhouse where the family lived at the time of her birth. A few years later the people of the community organized a school district and built a one-room schoolhouse that they named Victor Point, which the area became known by and the Lewisburg designation was discontinued.
Bertha grew up on the farm – one of seven children. Her mother passed away when she was a young girl. In 1920, she married a next door neighbor boy named James O. Darby and after the birth of their third child in 1924, they purchased a farm nearby. They eventually had seven children, one of which died soon after her birth. The remaining six were raised on the farm and went their various ways. Bertha’s husband, James, passed away in 1958 and she continued to live on the farm until 1980, when with her family’s help, she moved to a home in Silverton, Oregon. She lived alone there for several years until she decided to move to the Wilson House at the Methodist Retirement Center in Salem. It was on Easter Sunday, 1990, that she fell and broke her hip, requiring pinning surgery that day. Five days later she was moved to the Tierra Rose Care Center in Salem. Family and friends gathered at Tierra Rose on August 4, 1995, to celebrate Bertha’s 100th birthday.” [From Wes Darby of Salem, a son, October 11, 1995].
