February 28, 1919 - October 29, 2003
SALEM - Jean has gone home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was born in Stockton, Calif., the first child of Carlton and Crystal Gilgert. Jean was a direct descendant of the John G. Gilgert family who were pioneers in the San Joaquin County of California since 1853. Her childhood home was in that county in the farming community of Collegeville.
In 1930 Jean was awarded by the California State Agricultural Society the 4-H Champion Guernsey Cow Award at the State Fair. She graduated from Stockton High in 1935 at age 16. She continued her schooling at College of Pacific for one year, now University of Pacific. Then she attended the Bible Institute of Los Angeles, now BIOLA University, where she met her future husband, Rolland Myer.
Besides being classmates, she assisted Rolland as pianist and youth worker at the Evangelical Free Church of Englewood, Calif. Rolland was student pastor and also the first pastor of the church. On June 29, 1939 Jean and Rolland were united in marriage at the United Brethren Church of Stockton, Calif. Throughout their marriage she was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother working closely with her husband in ministry for over 60 years. Her deep faith and love for the Lord Jesus and others was shown through her caring spirit and spontaneous smile.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Carlton and Crystal Gilgert; her brother, Leroy Gilgert; and her baby grandson, Anthony Myer. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Rev. Rolland O. Myer of Salem, Ore.; her sister, Joyce Hightower of Collegeville, Calif.; her brother, Irving Gilgert of Ceres, Calif.; children, Daniel Myer of Atlanta, Georgia, David Myer of Salem, Donald Myer of Mansfield, Texas, Darlene Baskett of Salem and Dick Myer of Mt.
